So far...

I've gone from this:
To this:

I find it so useful to stop and lay out blocks and see what's missing and what is too abundant. Based on what I saw here I decided to make the next batch of blocks with very few pieces of the darkest fabrics, focusing on the whites and medium greens and mixing in just a little more yellow.  I want this quilt to calm down a little.  I'm also going to include some blocks that are half-size or otherwise different from these (not exactly crosses, crosses with borders, etc).

I'm piecing these blocks as leaders-and-enders while working on my cousin's graduation quilt, which seems to be coming along nicely, but is not yet big enough to spread out and assess.

  1. Hi Rossie... I just made a stole using the same idea and it is posted on my blog last week... take a look and scroll down a few posts to find it. I agree you need to have a change in scale and more yellow. Looks good. V vdenegrequilts(dot)blogspot(dot)com

  2. I always lay out my work at the beginning and end of a sewing session. It's helpful to look at a project with fresh eyes at the beginning and get a great sense of what you've accomplished at the end.

I love the color combos, but agree that some more yellow would really help it pop.

  3. I too like to lay things out to look at them. And, a secret trick passed on to me by an art teacher, I take off my glasses. Then I can focus more on the values, less on the actual colors!

  4. I agree on needing more yellow. The yellow that's there right now feels slightly out of place with everything else. i really like how the patterned fabrics read as various greys from a distance. It's looking great so far :)

  5. Coming along very nicely. Love the idea of mixing up the sizes of blocks.

  6. It looks lovely! What fabric is that black you used, the one with the green cross? The pattern is really interesting.

And I agree with DK about the yellows; I don't think you'd want more whites in there, but the yellow would look lovely.

  7. Hi Marisa, I'm not sure which black fabric you are referring to. If you look at the picture on flickr, I made notes about the black fabrics:

  8. This looks great. I like the ideas of adding some smaller crosses, & especially some not-quite-crosses.

  9. It looks awesome! Some more off-center crosses would be cool, too -- like in the second photo, bottom row, second from the right.

  10. I'm glad I'm not the only one who has to lay out things. I can't start putting a top together without getting it all arranged first. BTW - I love this quilt top - so wonderful!
